Poster House, the first museum in the United States dedicated to the global history of posters, will host its monthly “First Friday” event December 6, 2024, from 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM at Poster House, 119 West 23rd Street in Manhattan. On the first Friday of every month, Poster House offers free admission and extended hours for guests to come explore the museum’s latest exhibitions. The two main exhibitions currently on display for the fall season are Just Frame It: How Nike Turned Sports Stars into Superheroes and Lester Beall & A New American Identity. Both exhibits will be open through February 23, 2025.

Every First Friday is different, offering unique opportunities such as tours, workshops, performances, and activities, to further engage visitors with the exhibitions on display. First Friday activities for December 6th include:

·  1:00-7:00 PM:  Drop-In Tote Bag Screenprinting with The Arm

Try screenprinting with The Arm letterpress print shop! Participants will have the chance to screenprint an interplanetary funk-themed design on a provided tote bag.

·  1:00-7:00 PM: Drop-in Lino-Block Printing

Visitors can stop by Poster House’s history timeline to try lino-block printing, where they will pull their very own print inspired by Poster House’s exhibition Leaving the Smoke Behind: Enjoying an Awayday.

·  1:00-2:00 PM: Introductory Cyanotype Workshop

Join artist and printmaking expert Misa Chhan for an introduction to Cyanotype printing. Participants will learn the basics of this historic form of printmaking as well as techniques for shifting tones from blue to brown.

·  4:00 PM:  Hand-Lettering Workshop

Designer, educator, and CMYK member David Jon Walker will lead a fun and interactive hand-lettering workshop inspired by the bold typefaces and lettering in Poster House’s exhibition Lester Beall and A New American Identity. Participants will learn the basics of hand lettering and how to employ them in their own designs.

·  5:30 PM:  Space Jam 2: A New Legacy Movie Screening

Join Poster House for a screening of Space Jam 2: A New Legacy in conjunction with their exhibition Just Frame It! How Nike Turned Sports Stars into Superheroes.

·  7:00 – 8:30 PM: Interplanetary Funk Drag Show

Join Poster House for an intergalactic drag show inspired by Darryl “Chocolate Thunder” Dawkins, who is prominently featured in Poster House’s exhibition Just Frame It! How Nike Turned Sports Stars into Superheroes. The show will feature performances from Junior Mintt, Maljo Blu, Issa Big Dragon, and Dev Doee.

Free tickets can be reserved online in advance of December 6th. During normal hours, tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for students, educators, veterans, and seniors. Poster House offers free museum admission through New York City’s public library Culture Pass system.
