About The Musical: We are conducting a staged reading in preparation for NYC festivals and workshops the following year. THE BENCH: JOURNEY INTO LOVE is a musical dance spectacular that explores the many facets of love. Conceived and choreographed by Kiesha Lalama THE BENCH: JOURNEY INTO LOVE is a work with dramatic and comedic artistry that blends Lalama’s signature expressive movement as a “dance-maker” with a corps of dancers as “the storytellers” who take us through one family’s journey. Two vocalists -- one woman and one man, represent the mystical spirit and guides us into each “chapter of love” expressing the secret thoughts of the characters with song.
Lead Singer/Storytellers: Looking for two strong singer/actors, One Male and One Female, to deliver a variety of emotions and skills ranging from a Narrator type role to vocalizing other characters thoughts or conscience. Versatility and strong acting skills are necessary. Storytellers as narrators are wise, old souls, aware, intuitive, all-knowing, and thought provoking. Storytellers as other character conscience explore many levels of emotions such as: happiness, pain, vulnerability, humility, confusion, loss, and ultimately… love. Both singers must have strong musicality and some improvisational skills (e.g. McFerrin, Jarreau, Esperanza, Souza, Monheit, et al.). Sight-reading ability is a major plus but not an absolute requirement if one has strong memorization skills. Notes/What to bring: Please prepare a complete CONTEMPORARY jazz song and a contrasting musical theatre song showing range. Bring sheet music in correct key; accompanist provided but may not transpose. You will also be asked to sight-sing and improvise.
