This job does not pay. I'm saying that in the first line as to not waste your time. This is for a play in a festival.
Judith: Judith is a good person. She tries her hardest to please everyone and do what is morally right. She loves god and her family. She works hard at her job and when she comes home, she has another full time job of running the asylum of people around her, her daughter Melissa and fielding various messages from her siblings, Mary Ann, John, and Maureen. She’s understandably a little tired and weathered. She’s in her 50s.
Melissa: Melissa has been living with Judith for her entire life and it’s been slowly eating away at her. Judith, in all of her caring and worrying, can be somewhat annoying, leaving an endless stream of voicemails about vitamins and general nonsense. She has her own things to do and Judith is getting in the way.
Mary Ann: Mary Ann is crazy. Let me say that again. Mary Ann is totally nuts. She’s a money-hungry selfish childish woman who likes to scream and pout a lot. She’s in her later 40s or early 50s.
John: John is probably the most sane of Judith’s siblings, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have some fight in him. He has a family of his own and a few kids. Early 50s.
Maureen: Maureen is Judith’s eldest sister, in her early 60s. She tries to be an anchor and a source of reason for her siblings but this doesn’t always work and she often gets worked up herself over small details. She loves gardening.
Jeremy/ Doctor: I’m looking for one actor for two parts here. One is a pretty standard doctor part, he has a few lines, nothing special. The other part is a super scumbaggy ridiculous over the top asshole lawyer named Jeremy.
Melissa and Judith are in the first part of the play, Judith and the rest of the characters are in the second. The first part features Melissa listening to many of Judith's voicemails, and Melissa arguing with Judith. The second part of the play takes place in a hospital where Maria, Judith's mother, is on her deathbed and Judith and her siblings are visiting her.
I am not concerned with actor age for these roles so do not hesitate to submit if the character interests you even if your age does not match the age of the character description. I am also open to men playing some of the female parts (Judith, Maureen, Mary Ann, not Melissa) though probably not the other way around. I am looking for a lot of somewhat over-the-top energy for many of these characters, especially in the second part of the play.
The play is technically a sad drama since it's about Judith's life falling apart, but I don't expect it to take a very serious tone throughout, there's too much crazy going on. Please prepare a comedic monologue and I will send sides of the scenes. Maureen, Judith, Mary Ann, and John all have voicemail monologues which we will prerecord, possibly be prepared to cold read something of that nature. Auditions will be Tuesday evening, 6/11, in the village. Production dates are August 9-11.
Please send your headshots/ resumes and if you have them, any links to reels or clips you think would be helpful, to christinabebeau@gmail.com and I will contact you regarding an audition. Thanks!
