Ibsen, the father of modern drama, created one of the most confounding and complex characters when he first
penned Hedda Gabler in 1891. Since then, Hedda has become one of the most talked about fictional women in all of
drama, “the female Hamlet.” She bewitches her audiences, and over a century later still has the capacity to shock.
Just back from her honeymoon and bored with her marriage and domestic life, Hedda manipulates her situation
to devastating effect. Thru Hedda, Ibsen reveals the bitter conflicts and thwarted longings that lie just below the
“civilized” transactions of daily life.
