Auditions for NYU Devised Theatre Project Wilfredo Hernandez (Theatre Director & M.A. Candidate - NYU Gallatin School of Individualized Study) is seeking performers of diverse backgrounds and artistic talents to form a 6-10 member ensemble to work on a devised theatre piece exploring the language, images and mythology surrounding issues of LGBTQ equality in the US. The piece is being developed for the Devised Theatre Tutorial at the NYU Gallatin School of Individualized Study (a course which he helped to design and implement). The final 20-minute piece will premier as part of a public showcase at University Settlement’s Speyer Hall performance space on December 7, 2012 and will also feature the work of four other directors from the class. (A mandatory Full Tech/Dress will be on December 6th. All performers should have open availability throughout the first week of December to accommodate the possibility of scheduling changes).
Seeking: As this is a devised theatre piece, the director is striving to build a multicultural collective of young, emerging artists (Ages 19-29) who can bring a myriad of perspectives, experiences and voices to the work. The director has an extremely collaborative and open process and seeks artists who are fearless in their creative risk taking and can function as part of a close-knit ensemble. Especially interested in performing artists with training and experience in improvisation, physical theatre, mask work, puppetry, dance/movement, music/vocals, languages (including American Sign Language), international performance styles, visual arts, etc. There is no pay for this project, however meals will be provided for ensemble rehearsals greater than four hours in length.

All performers should come prepared with a two-minute dramatic reading (monologue, poetry, literature, etc. – bring a piece that highlights your individuality and performance capabilities – Director is interested in emotional range and depth – but also creative potential). Performers should also prepare a one-minute pantomime and bring one hard copy of their headshot/resume. There will be a collaborative component of this audition as well. Come dressed comfortably and able to move around freely.
Callbacks: Callbacks will be held on Sunday, Oct. 7 from 12pm-3pm. Performers will be notified immediately following the audition session if they are needed at callbacks. We ask performers to think/plan ahead with regards to the possibility of a callback.
Rehearsals & Meetings: Subsequent rehearsals will be scheduled as 2-5 hour sessions over the weekend (usually Saturday mornings/afternoons) in NY. Due to the short amount of time associated with this project we are seeking performers who can genuinely commit to the entirety of the devising and rehearsal process, therefore Saturday & Sunday availability is a must. (IMPORTANT NOTE: The ensemble will be required to attend full meetings of the tutorial cohort at NYU for developmental staging purposes and group feedback discussions on October 24 & 31 and November 14 & 28 from 6:45pm-8:45pm. These dates are mandatory.)
